Background to Gairloch Garden

Development of our garden

In 1985 we moved into our new home in Blenheim Ave., Oberon and we were confronted with a bare block of 1600 square metres. A high priority was to reform some of the slope on the block to level areas for our young family.

In 1996 we made a commitment to remain in Oberon for the long term which rejuvinated our interest to further develop the garden. This involved the erection of a 9m x 6m workshop and the construction of 13 hen houses (Meg's Poultry Penthouse). Along with this four additional avairies were constructed.

By the early 2000's the garden had been developed to it's fullest, or so we thought. In 2007 we had the opportunity to purchase the neighbouring property, which we did with little hesitation. This now gave us a total of 2400sq m of garden. The next 3 years were totally consumed with creating what had long been missing in the original garden. Unlike the original garden, which had evolved over 15 years from a cleared block to a garden that accommodated both our plans plus the requirements of three young boys, the new garden was totally planned before construction commenced.

The combined garden now features a wide variety of segmented areas, often divided by hedging or masonry and timber constructions. Such distinct areas now include the fernery, parterre garden, crimson birch grove, high flow river, croquet lawn, sunken garden, meandering stream, and vertical garden.
